Memories and wishes from Evanston
Dear Emily,
I wanted to let you know that we are all thinking of you and rooting for you each day, that you will soon be home and feeling well.
We have so many fond memories from when you and your family were our close neighbors in Evanston. I still remember the day your parents told us that they were going to have a baby (you!), they were so excited!
You and Alec have been friends since you were babies. You always seemed to enjoy each other's company so much, whether you were playing at each other's houses, or in your toddler playgroup (which also included Cameron, Jack, and Sean), going to music class together (though Alec sometimes spent the class chanting "park Emma"--because he wanted to go to the park with you afterwards--he couldn't pronounce your name back then so he called you Emma), or the beach.
Later on at Northminster Nursery School, you guys had fun together in the Purple class (with Mrs. Berkowski and Mrs. Page), and were always thinking up some goofy idea together, like running off and making the teachers chase you ;)
We really miss spending time with you and your family, and being able to celebrate holidays together, but at least we can still do our yearly Easter bunny cake-bake off with pictures (you guys always have the coolest cake)!
We had a great time the summer before last when we got to come stay at your beautiful house. It was so much fun swimming in your pool, toasting marshmallows, going to the beach (remember our awesome sand castle?), and getting ice cream.
You are such a strong, wonderful, kind girl with an amazing spirit. You have been through so much, and you will get through this too! You have so many people thinking of you, praying for you, and cheering you on!
With love from the Chatfields
Thanks for the memories
Sara, Your note really highlighted the best times we spent in Illinois. Alec and Emmy really hit it off and always had fun times as toddlers. Your visit to MA was such a great reminder of how well they got along. I consider myself so lucky to have met such like minded rabbit-loving friends during my time in Evanston. I truly think it's such a miraculous event that we were volunteering at a animal shelter at the same time and had so much in common on a personal level. We really enjoyed spending the holidays together. You guys are by far the best vegetarian cooks I've met. I look forward to more times together when life gets settled.
Hi Emily
I'm Annie Brackett-York, your 2nd cousin. We've never met but when you get well I hope to see you. I'm 8 years old the same as your brother Ian. Happy belated birthday. You and my grandma share the same birthday! I hope you get well soon. Annie
the final countdown
Hi Emily,
Some of my favorite memories of the summer visit are associated with our dance parties! I loved listening to "The Final Countdown" on constant repeat and moving around like a crazy person with you and Ian. You are the best couch dancer I know! In honor of tomorrow's big event I shall play "The Final Countdown" and think of you, praying that everything goes smoothly. I love you!
Katie
The final countdown
Katie, I'm happy to report that we did our own rendition of TFC and it was a smashing success! Of course, I can't think about Evanston without out mentioning you. You were/are a Godsend! You were such a wonderful companion to Emily during my sanity preservation trips to Target. I don't know how you juggled full time work and going for your masters, while still coming to babysit. Your the gift that keeps giving thanks to your annual summer visits. We're so thankful that you're still part of our lives!!
A Fine day for a Transplant
Good morning, Emily. I just checked the weather in Boston. Looks like it is going to be cloudy with a chance of rain but the temperature is mild and the wind is calm. Sounds like a good day to start growing a fresh immune system! We are thinking of you and sending prayers. (PS. I know sometimes you are sad and sometimes you are scared. I think that is okay. But I wish for you, more often than not, to feel hope in the strength of the medicine and joy in the love from friends and family.) Megan
Thinking of you
Emily,
We are all thinking of you today, and imagining you receiving the new immune system that will help you get healthy! We are amazed when reading the blog your dad so lovingly writes, with just how strong and brave you are!
Sending love from Evanston,
The Chatfields
My thoughts are all about you
My thoughts are all about you again today. I send my love to you & your Dad & Mom & Ian.
I love you very, very much! Grandma XXXOOOXXX
Taking Walks
Hello Emily! I'm so glad to hear you are taking walks down the hallway again. I remember, when I was in treatment, how important it was to keep moving. Some days I just wanted to stay in bed. But I knew that getting up and moving around would usually make me feel better later (after I caught my breath). I am so proud of you. Maybe tomorrow you will walk a little further. And if you keep it up, day after day, one day you might just walk all the way to Chicago! (Don't try that in winter.) Good night. I hope you sleep well. Megan
